Tuesday, February 07, 2012THE IMPORTANCE OF FINDING THE RIGHT CHAIR

In the past I’ve written about all manner of ‘seating devices’ (for want of a better term) - I’ve gone into some detail about benches and stools, but until now, I’ve left the humble chair alone. The title of this piece really needs no further explanation – I mean it’s not rocket science, when it comes to plonking our bodies down – chairs matter! Of course they are important, and, by extension, so is finding one that suits you...

I’m hard pressed to think of a more common piece of furniture, let’s face it, they’re everywhere, the choices are endless, the variety and styling are incredible – but it’s interesting to dip into the past and learn that this wasn’t always the case. Pre 16th century the chair (as we know it now – high back etc) was certainly not common in the homes of the ‘people’, actually until then the chair was a representation of authority –think of many a King’s, Queen’s and Pope’s throne or the ‘higher seats’ of the Tang Dynasty. The word ‘chair’ itself is closely associated not only to power – (where does the word Chairman derive from?) but also to academia, many professors are known as ‘chairs’. By all this rather grand association it’s no surprise to learn that a large number of early chair designs were more than a touch elaborate and costly – the Egyptians, King’s and Lords loved their bling! Thankfully, Renaissance period onwards, chairs became an item used by all.  Which, in a roundabout way, brings me back to the importance of finding one that suits you- with so much (quality) time spent sitting it’s good to have the right design.

We specialise in timber – so the vast majority of our ranges are all wood. There is a timeless quality to wood – swing by our showroom and see for yourself. Need chairs to match a table, to use in an office, the kitchen? – we can colour match designs for you, and we can make a few recommendations of our own. We have great styles, which of course are so important in the decision making process, but we also advise you to sit down on the real thing and try it out – so important to love the design and love the comfort and even better, now that we have Summer specials on, to love the price too!
